Sustainability is often defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We take sustainability seriously at Furman. In fact, one of the four primary pillars of the university's strategic plan is to “strengthen our commitment to the environment by promoting sustainability through educational programs, campus operations/construction practices, and public awareness initiatives.”
Furman President David Shi has been an avid supporter of campus sustainability efforts and is a member of the steering committee of the American College and University President's Climate Commitment, a group of 583 higher education leaders committed to reducing their campus’ contribution to global warming. You can read the most recent president's report on campus sustainability here.
At Furman, we strive to promote ecological stability, social respect, and economic vitality for all generations and all people. We are fulfilling the goal of sustainability at Furman in part through green building practices, energy and water conservation programs, recycling, environmentally responsible dining services, “green” purchasing policies, and innovative research and teaching.
